In her comparatively small garden she cultivated over 200 orchids and over 500 varieties of roses, long before hybrid tea roses and perpetuals were fashionable.
Free-spirited and stubborn from the very beginning, the garden quickly shunned plants that did not suit it's fancy: lavender, tea roses and thyme, were quickly rejected.
