Halloween: La fiesta de Halloween se celebra el día 31 de octubre, el día antes de All Saints' Day, también llamado All Hallows (Todos los Santos). Desde hace mucho tiempo en esta festividad cobran un protagonismo destacado los espíritus y las brujas. Los niños hacen turnip lanterns, (farolillos hechos con calabazas vaciadas) y en Escocia hacen guising (esto es, se disfrazan y van de casa en casa cantando o recitando poemas para que los dueños de la casa les den dinero). En los EE. UU. los niños se difrazan al atardecer y van de puerta en puerta con un saco en la mano. Cuando el dueño de la casa abre la puerta los niños gritan: ‘Trick or treat!’; el inquilino elige entonces entre darles un treat (dulce) o sufrir un trick (susto). Hoy en día los sustos prácticamente han desaparecido, pues los niños solo se acercan a aquellas casas en las que las luces de fuera están encendidas, lo cual funciona como señal de bienvenida.
