- LOE - Ley Orgánica de Educación (2006)
- This Spanish reform established four stages of pre-university education: non-compulsory educación infantil, from birth to six years; compulsory primary education, Primaria, from six to twelve; compulsory secondary education, ESO - Educación Secundaria Obligatoria, from twelve to sixteen; and either two years of Bachillerato, leading to university entrance, or two years of Formación Profesional Específica de Grado Medio, vocational training that can lead to Formación Profesional Específica de Grado Superior. The LOE superseded the LOGSE Ley Orgánica de Ordenación General del Sistema Educativo of 1990. The major change was a reduction in humanities subjects in the curriculum, while citizenship classes Educación para la Ciudadanía were introduced. The latter have been controversial in some quarters.
- Primaria
- The name given in Spain to the first of the two compulsory levels of education. It is for pupils between six and twelve years of age and leads to the ESO - Educación Secundaria Obligatoria.
- ESO - Educación Secundaria Obligatoria
- One of the stages of secondary education established in Spain by the LOE - Ley Orgánica de Educación (2006) It begins at twelve years of age and ends at sixteen, the age at which compulsory education ends. The old division between a technical and an academic education is not as marked in ESO, as all secondary pupils receive basic professional training.
- educación infantil
- In Spain, a period of non-compulsory pre-school education. It provides care and teaching for children from birth to the age of six, when they begin formal education.
Parents wishing their children to receive educación infantil take them to guarderías guardería catering for children up to six years of age, or to colegios colegio that offer educación infantil to children from three to six years of age. Guarderías are not free and their cost varies according to whether they are privately or publicly funded.
- Bachillerato
- A traditional term for secondary education. Today in Spain, under the LOE - Ley Orgánica de Educación (2006) it specifically means the last two years of secondary education (16-18 years) following ESO - Enseñanza Secundaria Obligatoria, for students who wish to go to university.
In parts of Latin America Bachillerato is the examination taken at the end of secondary education. In Peru it means the first university degree. LOE - Ley Orgánica de Educación (2006), ESO - Educación Secundaria Obligatoria
