Der theoretische Ansatz verbindet Theoriestränge, in denen Organisationen als handelnde Akteure sowie als Handeln ermöglichende und begrenzende Strukturen betrachtet werden.
In der ersten Förderperiode wurde vor allem der Ertrag des Neo-Institutionalismus geprüft, in der zweiten Förderperiode wird der theoretische Ansatz um prozessorientierte Ansätze des organizing, der Strukturationstheorie und der CCO-Perspektive ergänzt.
Das Untersuchungsdesign verbindet zwei Arbeitspakete.
