Aufgrund der Lücken – sowohl in der Überlieferung der Quellen als auch in der Dokumentation der Chronologie von Komposition und Drucklegung – lässt daher sich eine Fassung letzter Hand nicht eindeutig rekonstruieren ( vgl. die ausführlichen Darlegungen im Kritischen Bericht ).
Dies bedeutet in der Konsequenz, dass man sich der letztendlich vom Komponisten intendierten Gestalt der Solostimme nur annähern kann, umgekehrt dem Cellisten eine gewisse Freiheit zugestehen muss, vom edierten Notentext abzuweichen und Varianten aus anderen Quellen den Vorzug zu geben.
Daher hat sich der Henle Verlag entschlossen, ergänzend zum Bemerkungsteil eine synoptische Übersicht als Download anzubieten, in der die Solostimme gemäß den Hauptquellen über der edierten Stimme erscheint.
