Initially, it was only available as a soft-top; but a bolt on hardtop was later introduced to the public after the aftermarket hardtops became popular.
On the hardtop version the top could be removed but no soft-top was provided as the area it would have been folded into was occupied by a small rear seat.
The retractable hardtop solves some issues with the soft-top convertible, but has its own compromises, namely mechanical complexity, expense and more often than not, reduced luggage capacity.
