In terms of topsoil, the northern soil is free draining, slightly acid but base-rich soils, producing extremely fertile pastures and deciduous woodland.
The herds were considered inferior at first, but these pastures were good for stock, and the land which seemed a desert was actually good fattening country.
On them are to be found not only fertile fields but fruitful orchards, pleasant pastures, lovely lawns, and handsome, commodious and elegant residences.
Ideal areas include pastures, rock ledges, limestone and cedar glades, and openings in woods and forests such as those created by power line rights-of-way.
