Generally, we seem to tend toward serial monogamy, in which we have a series of (monogamous) relationships for extended periods with a number of partners, rather than one for life.
It is the result of the marital breakdown we have all seen and experienced and it leads to further cynicism as we endure the travails of serial monogamy.
