Dabei war er sich seiner malerischen Tradition stets bewusst und nannte so unterschiedliche Positionen wie die Vitraux der Kathedrale von Chartres, den Isenheimer Altar Grünewald’s, Jean Fautrier oder Mark Rothko als Wegbereiter seiner Malerei.
In seinem Hauptwerk schuf er in einer Art moderner Schichtenmalerei großformatige, scheinbar „monochrome“ Arbeiten, bei denen er sich in einer radikalen Reduktion auf die Farbe und das Licht als künstlerische Maxime konzentrierte, laut ihm “the totality of painting”.
In die gleiche Zeit fallen erste namhafte Ausstellungen und 1978 die Gründung der Gruppe „Radical Painting“, zusammen mit Jerry Zeniuk, Joseph Marioni, Günther Umberg oder auch Marcia Hafif.

In his main work he created large-sized, seemingly monochrome works in a kind of layer painting, which he created concentrating on the artistic principle of a radical reduction to colour and light, according to him “the totality of painting”.
At the same time he was presented at his first renowned exhibitions and in 1978 founded the group “Radical Painting” together with Jerry Zeniuk, Joseph Marioni, Günther Umberg as well as Marcia Hafif.
