Als 1914 die Frankfurter Universität als Stiftung der Bürger gegründet wurde, brachte die SGN ihre botanischen und Teile der zoologischen Sammlung in das neu gegründete Biologische Institut ein.
Der Sektionär für Botanik bei der SGN , zu dieser Zeit Martin Möbius ( 1859-1946 ) , wurde gleichzeitig erster Professor für Botanik an der Universität und war auch “ Stiftsbotanikus ” der “ Dr. Senckenbergischen Stiftung ” in Personalunion .
Im Laufe der Zeit divergierten jedoch die Forschungsfelder an der Universität und bei der SGN zunehmend, so dass sich die Institutionen wieder trennten.
