Hildebrandt wurde im Jahre 1914 als Sohn des Kunsthistorikers Prof. Dr. Hans Hildebrandt und seiner Ehefrau , der Künstlerin Lily Hildebrandt , geboren .
Zunächst studierte er Physik, später jedoch zog er nach Berlin, wo er auch in Psychologie promovierte.
