Unlike its relatives which are mainly known from subtropical or tropical waters, this species seems to have ranged in temperate or even subarctic areas.
Above the timber line in about 1250to1350 m follows the subalpine vegetation zone, which is marked by knee timber, mat-grass meadows and subarctic highmoors.
