In its Scandinavian origins, this typically meant in the forest, but orienteering in open fell, heathland, moorland and other mixed terrain is also common.
The surrounding area has leached, gravelly-sandy soils with layers of hardpan, covered by open sand, large areas of heathland and extensive coniferous forest.
Around the peak, there is montane heathland, with plant life including heather, bilberries and cowberries, although this is being damaged by hillwalking and grazing.
