In the 1970s there were very few cryptographers, except for those in military or intelligence organizations, and little academic study of cryptography.
Together, they established a scrivenery employing scriveners who acted as secretaries, writers, translators, copyists and cryptographers, dealing with correspondence, translations, copying, ciphers, essays, books, plays, entertainments and masques.
Both efforts include some of the best cryptographers in the world therefore conflicts in their selections and recommendations should be examined with care.
A number of attempts were made by other cryptographers to produce a system that was neither trivial to break nor too difficult for the intended recipient to decipher.
