Unlike most of the other diseases and complications that commonly occur alongside Werner syndrome, these ulcers are not associated with normal aging in members of the general population.
Since the discovery of the gene, it has become clear that the premature aging displayed in Werner syndrome is not the same, on a cellular level, as normal aging.
