Die für CVD geeigneten Stoffe bzw. Moleküle werden Vorläufer genannt (engl. precursor), denn das endgültige Material der Beschichtung entsteht ja erst daraus.

Diese wird noch innerhalb des Zellkerns durch den sogenannten Mikroprozessor, einen Komplex aus mehreren Proteinen, zur nur noch ca. 60 Nukleotide langen precursor miRNA (Vorläufer-miRNA, pre-miRNA) umgewandelt.
Die pre-miRNA wird aktiv aus dem Zellkern in das Zytoplasma transportiert und dort zur reifen miRNA verarbeitet.

The pre-miRNAs are actively transported out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm, where they are further processed into mature miRNAs.
