Seit 2002 beteiligt sich der Botanische Garten einmal jährlich an diesen Pflegemaßnahmen im Naturschutzgebiet.
Auf dem Mainzer Sand haben sich neben osteuropäischen Steppenpflanzen, wie den Federgräsern (Stipa capillata und Stipa joannis), dem Sand-Lotwurz (Onosma arenaria) oder dem Büschel-Gipskraut (Gypsophila fastigiate), auch Pflanzen erhalten, die aus dem Mittelmeergebiet eingewandert waren.

In addition to Eastern European steppe plants such as feather grasses (Stipa capillata and Stipa joannis), the rare purple goldendrop (Onosma arenaria), and the fastigiate gypsophila (Gypsophila fastigiata), there are also plants that migrated here from the Mediterranean region.
