Von 1993 bis 1994 arbeitete sie an der FU Berlin, danach an der TU Chemnitz als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in einem EU-Projekt zu „ Future Working Structures “, aus dem 1998 die Promotion mit einem internationalen Vergleich in der Automobilindustrie hervorging.
Während der Promotionsphase nahm Wilkens einen vom German Marshall Fund geförderten Forschungsaufenthalt am Economic Policy Institute in Washington D.C. und am MIT wahr .
Zwischen 1998 und 2004 war sie als wissenschaftliche Assistentin an der Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaften der TU Chemnitz tätig, von 1997 bis 2000 dort auch Gleichstellungsbeauftragte.
