Anschliessend arbeitete Regina Aebi-Müller an einem Habilitationsprojekt, das durch den Schweizerischen Nationalfonds finanziert wurde.
Parallel dazu nahm sie einen Lehrauftrag für ZGB an der Universität Fribourg wahr.
Auf das Herbstssemester 2004 wurde sie als Assistenzprofessorin an die Universität Luzern berufen.
