Einige wenige Gemälde aus der de Witschen Sammlung blieben erhalten, die Heyersche ikonografische Sammlung wurde für Leipzig nicht angekauft.
Die heutige Sammlung besteht aus etwa 400 Werken, darunter auch einige Raritäten, aus dem 16. bis 20. Jahrhundert.
