Sein Vater Johannes Weller war Bürgermeister der Stadt Freiburg, starb jedoch schon 1509.
Für den am 5. April 1499 geborenen Sohn bedeutete der frühe Tod des Vaters, dass er zu seinem Onkel nach Naumburg gebracht wurde, wo er die Domschule besuchte.
