Genau wie der Rest der Kanaren ist auch Teneriffa ein Sohn Plutos.
Während die vulkanische Aktivität der östlichen Inseln schon vor mehr als 20 Millionen Jahren begann, erhob sich der älteste Berg Teneriffas aus dem Atlantik viel später, vor etwa 8 bis 12 Millionen Jahren.
