Mehr als der Handlung galt Liszts Interesse den drei sie bestimmenden Charakteren.

Der gespenstische dritte Satz ( Mephistopheles ), in dem die Faust-Themen zunehmend entstellt und persifliert werden, ist dem Finale von Berlioz ’ Symphonie fantastique verpflichtet ( die Anfangstakte beider Finali stimmen nahezu notengetreu überein ).
Am Ende glätten sich die Wogen – mit einem Chorfinale in strahlendem C-Dur, in dem Liszt die Schlussverse des Faust II vertonte.

The ghostly third movement ( “ Mephistopheles ” ), in which the “ Faust ” themes are increasingly distorted and parodied, owes a debt to the finale of Berlioz ’ s Symphonie fantastique ( the opening bars of both finales are almost identical ).
At the end, the tension subsides – with a choral finale in radiant C major in which Liszt sets the last lines of Goethe ’ s Faust II.
