Um den Leichnam Christi sind die Jungfrau Maria , Maria Magdalena , Johannes , Nikodemus und Maria von Cleofa gruppiert , die Arme und die Augen in einer Geste allerhöchster dramatischer Anspannung zum Himmel erhebt .
Als Caravaggio um das Jahr 1592-93 nach Rom kam, wurde er zum Mittelpunkt einer echten künstlerischen Revolution, was die Behandlung der Sujets, die Verwendung der Farben und den Einsatz des Lichts anbetraf, und war zweifelsohne die herausragendste Persönlichkeit der “ realistischen ” Strömung in der Malerei des 17.
