As a founding member of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), Germany has played its part in shaping the partnership from the very beginning;it contributes to the multilateral GPE Fund and participates in its governance bodies.
In addition, in 2011 the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) commissioned GIZ to launch the German BACKUP Initiative – Education in Africa (BACKUP Education).
