Trotz reichhaltiger Vorkommen an Bodenschätzen sowie einer verhältnismäßig stabilen politischen Situation beschränkt sich der Wiederaufbauprozess in der Provinz Katanga im Südosten der Demokratischen Republik Kongo auf die städtischen Räume entlang des sogenannten Kupfergürtels.
Vor allem im Osten und Norden der Provinz hat die ländliche Bevölkerung bisher nicht von einer „ Friedensdividende “ im Sinne einer wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Entwicklung profitiert.
Die massiven und langjährigen Migrationsbewegungen in der Provinz haben dazu geführt, dass die landwirtschaftlichen Flächen systematisch vernachlässigt wurden und fast der gesamte Viehbestand aus der Region verschwand.
