Beyond the Dutch ist auf drei Perioden fokussiert:
die kulturelle Beeinflussung während der Kolonialzeit ab 1900, die Folgen der Dekolonisierung und Unabhängigkeit (ab 1950) und die gegenwärtige Periode des Post-Kolonialismus (seit etwa 2000).
