Soldat mit Erfindergeist
Als Sohn eines kinderreichen Gutspächters in schwieriger wirtschaftlicher Lage wollte Werner Siemens den Eltern die finanzielle Last des ursprünglich geplanten Studiums an der Berliner Bauakademie nicht zumuten.
Er trat in die preußische Artillerie ein und konnte so im Rahmen der Offiziersausbildung an der Artillerie- und Ingenieurschule in Berlin 1835-1838 studieren.

Werner Siemens had originally planned to study at the Bauakademie (Academy of Civil Engineering) in Berlin but, as the family was large and in financial difficulty, he did not want to place this additional burden on his parents.
Instead, he joined the Prussian army and, as part of his officer's training, was able to study at the School of Artillery and Engineering in Berlin from 1835 to 1838.
