You need a pickax, a flat-edged shovel, pruners, gloves, sturdy shoes, pants and a long-sleeved shirt because ivy, as if it weren't already vile enough, can cause a rash, too.
Remember, this method is for removing ivy on the ground -- not that you were actually considering swinging a pickax on the stuff growing up your trees.
