These sediments consist of eolian quartz, clay minerals, volcanic ash, subordinate residue of siliceous microfossils, and authigenic minerals such as zeolites, limonite and manganese oxides.
It is also used for dating the deposition of geological sediments after they have been transported by air (eolian sediments) or rivers (fluvial sediments).
