The original progressives were indeed wrong -- reprehensibly so -- on race and gender (even if the 2016 presidential campaign demonstrates that part of the electorate thinks otherwise).
Generally the government will never condone such a thing as we find it reprehensibly and should be condemned in every circle in which there is a facility to condemn it.
