This clade contains all the migratory species of pitta, and it is thought that many of the pitta species from islands are derived from migratory species.
An adult pitta is distinctively marked with a black head and breast contrasting with a crimson belly and prominent, pale blue, narrow raised stripes extending back from the eyes.
