Neurologist Klaus-Jürgen Neumärker, who has comprehensively analysed Fallada ’s medical records, noted that Fallada had been far more aware of his health problems than has hitherto been indicated in his biographies, and that he had in some instances sought admission voluntarily.
The Fallada Days take up this issue among other things with a reading by actor Jörg Gudzuhn from Fallada’s volume of short stories, A Short Treatise on the Joys of Morphinism (Sachlicher Bericht über das Glück, ein Morphinist zu sein).
The programme also includes an illustrated volume of texts on Fallada’s family ties, also depicted in an exhibition running since 2012, and a 1968 documentary film Das Portrait Hans Fallada.
