www.desy.deThe extremely successful Standard Model, the current main theory of particle physics, also emerged from the intense interplay of theory and experiment.
For instance, the theory describing the strong interaction – quantum chromodynamics – predicts that the force between the quarks should be transmitted by so-called gluons.
These “ glue ” particles that hold the quarks together were discovered in 1979 at the PETRA accelerator at DESY.
www.desy.deAuch das überaus erfolgreiche Standardmodell, die gängige Theorie der Teilchenphysik, ist aus dem intensiven Zusammenspiel von Theorie und Experiment entstanden.
So sagte zum Beispiel die Theorie der starken Wechselwirkung, die Quantenchromodynamik, voraus, dass die Kraft zwischen den Quarks von so genannten Gluonen übertragen werden sollte.
Diese Klebeteilchen zwischen den Quarks wurden 1979 am PETRA-Beschleuniger bei DESY entdeckt.

The prize, worth 1.16 million euros, provides funding over the next five years for research as part of the extensive project on quantum chromodynamics.
The project, called “ Nuclear Physics from Quantum Chromodynamics ”, conducts theoretical investigations into the properties of strongly interacting matter.

Der mit 1,16 Millionen Euro dotierte Preis finanziert für die nächsten fünf Jahre die Forschungsarbeit des umfangreichen Projekts zur Quantenchromodynamik.
In dem Projekt mit dem Namen „ Nuclear Physics from Quantum Chromodynamics “ werden die Eigenschaften der stark wechselwirkenden Materie theoretisch untersucht.
