The Ethnological Museum was founded by Pope Pius XI with the Motu Proprio Quoniam tam praeclara on 12 November 1926, on the closure of the Universal Missionary Exhibition, which the Pontiff himself had desired on the occasion of the Holy Year of 1925.
On 1 February 1927 the museum was inaugurated in the rooms of the Lateran Palace where it remained until 1963.
In 1973, under the pontificate of Paul VI, it was relocated in its present site in the Vatican.
