Statewide, 36 percent of eighth graders in urban schools were at risk of dropping out compared to 8 percent of students in suburban/rural school districts, according to the index.
During the same period, 28 percent of 11th and 12th graders in rural school districts took the exam, compared to 32 percent of urban students in the same grades.
