- Although it plays a less central role than in the first half of the 20th century with only 10% of employees unionized, the trade union movement is still a significant actor in French public life and has considerable power and influence. The unions which have the broadest national base are the CGT (traditionally allied with the parti communiste), the CFDT (traditionally allied with the parti socialiste), FO, the CFTC, the CGC and the FEN.
