Zu Anfang des 20. Jhdts. entdeckte man mit unbemannten Registrierballons oberhalb der Troposphäre eine Schicht mit etwa konstanter oder leicht ansteigender Temperatur.
Solch ein Temperaturprofil bewirkt eine stabile, i.e. konvektions- und austauscharme Schichtung.
Daher erhielt diese Schicht den Namen Stratosphäre ( von lat. stratum „ Decke “ und gr. σφαίρα, sfaira „ Kugel “ ).

Such a temperature profile leads to a stable layer, i.e. a region poor in convective and exchange processes.
Thus, this layer was denoted as the stratosphere ( from Latin stratum „ cover “ and Greek σφαίρα, sfaira „ sphere “ ).
