Baierischer Dialekt wird nur in den altbayerischen Gegenden gesprochen, also in den Regierungsbezirken Oberbayern, Niederbayern und Oberpfalz. Der Regierungsbezirk Schwaben gehört zum schwäbisch-alemannischen Sprachraum. In Mittel-, Ober- und Unterfranken wird ostfränkischer Dialekt gesprochen.
Insgesamt lassen sich mehr als 60 kleinräumige Dialektlandschaften unterscheiden.
