Mit dem bloßen Auge konnte man sowohl die äußeren Bereiche der Korona als auch die überraschend rosa glimmenden Protuberanzen erkennen, wo auf dem Foto nur entweder das eine oder das andere Phänomen sichtbar gemacht werden kann.

Die äußere Atmosphäre der Sonne, die Korona, wird mit optischen Instrumenten im gesamten Spektralbereich vom Sichtbaren bis zum EUV (extremen UV-Licht) vom Weltraum aus beobachtet und ihre Plasmaeigenschaften werden mit spektroskopischen Methoden diagnostiziert.
Die unteren Schichten der Atmosphäre, die Photosphäre und die Chromosphäre, werden anhand von spektropolarimetrischen Messungen und mit abbildenden Techniken vom Boden aus, vom Weltraum aus, und auch mit Hilfe von Stratosphärenballons untersucht.

The outer atmosphere of the Sun, the corona, will be observed from space with optical instruments covering the full spectral range from visible to EUV (extreme UV), and its plasma characteristics are analyzed by spectroscopic means.
The lower layers of the atmosphere, the photosphere and the chromosphere, are investigated by spectropolarimetric measurements and with imaging techniques from ground, from space and via stratospheric balloons.
