Am 17. April 2007 einigte man sich auf die Gründung der ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly ( AIPA ).
Ziel der AIPA ist die aktive Unterstützung der Zielsetzung der ASEAN, nämlich die Schaffung einer südostasiatischen Staatengemeinschaft bis 2015 auf der Grundlage der drei Säulen des Integrationsprozesses:
1. ASEAN Political and Security Community, 2. ASEAN Economic Community, 3. ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community.

Malaysia ist als Schwellenland aus der Rolle eines Nehmerlandes der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit herausgewachsen und übernimmt zunehmend Verantwortung für die Entwicklung in der Region sowie den regionalen Integrationsprozess.
Die bilaterale Zusammenarbeit zwischen Malaysia und Deutschland wurde Ende 2011 beendet.
