Das vorgeschlagene Projekt soll dazu beitragen, eine technische Lösung zur Senkung der CO2- Emissionen aus Kraftwerken zu erarbeiten, die für Deutschland bzw. die deutschen Industrie in Hinblick auf die Erfüllung der Anforderungen des Kyoto-Protokolls von wesentlichem Interesse ist.
Im Vorläuferprojekt der Universität Bayreuth im Rahmen des "CO2-TRAP"-Verbundes (BMBF- Forschungsschwerpunkt "Geologische CO2-Speicherung") wurde in Experimenten mit Flugaschen das wissenschaftliche Konzept des ALCATRAP- Prozesses entwickelt.
