When these cataracts are viewed through an ophthalmoscope or other magnification system, the appearance is similar to white spokes of a wheel pointing inwards.
Examination with an ophthalmoscope will initially show no changes, but in a few months atrophy of the retina will resemble the appearance of progressive retinal atrophy.
The diameter of the blood vessels around the optic disc is about 150 m, and an ophthalmoscope allows observation of blood vessels with diameters as small as 10 m.
