It can indicate certain medical conditions in which there is reduced venous return of blood to the heart, such as cardiac tamponade or constrictive pericarditis.
Another, longer term, complication is if pericarditis recurs over a longer period of time (normally more than 3 months), it can become constrictive pericarditis.
