Die Aufgaben von BIOTESC beinhalten die Unterstützung von Wissenschaftlern aus der ganzen Welt bei der Planung und Implementierung von biologischen Experimenten im Europäischen Weltraumlabor COLUMBUS der ISS, sowie das Bereitstellen der dafür notwendigen Infrastruktur.
Zudem unterstützt BIOTESC die Astronauten in der ISS bei der Durchführung biomedizinischer Experimente aus einem eigens dafür ausgestatteten Kontrollraum.

Task of the center include providing the necessary infrastructure and support to scientists conducting biological experiments in the European Space Laboratory “COLUMBUS” on the ISS.
Moreover, BIOTESC supports the astronauts while executing biological experiments on-board ISS from our integrated Control Room.

On 7 February 2008, Space Shuttle " Atlantis ", with the two ESA astronauts Hans Schlegel and Léopold Eyharts on board, was launched on its mission to carry the " Columbus " space laboratory to the ISS.
